I saw this at goodreads and thought it might be fun for Brunchers who may want to play. It’s pretty simple, actually. Just read an author from every letter of the alphabet over the course of the next year, for example, Isaac Asimov, Charlotte Bronte, Joseph Campbell, etc. It doesn’t matter what order you read the books in as long as you hit all the letters of the alphabet in the next year.

Then periodically post in this thread to update your progress. Maybe people will post their lists so others can see what they have read (helps if you might be stuck for an author on a certain letter). Last year I was able to read more than a book a week for the whole year, so this year I wanted a different kind of challenge to encourage me to read authors I might not otherwise look at, so this seemed cool.

Starts January 1, 2010 and I will bump this thread then if needed. Any takers?

I think this is a great idea and I'll give it a try, though I'm not really much on the follow thru with this sort of thing. Then again, if I just read from A-F that's still an improvement.

First book: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I don't know if I am going to go through in order, but I'm starting with A.

Sounds like a cool idea. I tend to forget to record things by halfway through the year (see this year's LJ book list for proof), and free time for reading is going to be a bit harder to come by after January, but I may give it a shot. X is the hard one, the easiest way to find an author is a Chinese author, and I find translated Chinese literature really quite slow reading.

I managed about 20 novels so far this year, so this sounds like a more achievable goal than 50 in 2010 anyway.
(for X we may have to be generous about reading non-fiction or consider the mighty canon of Chinese writers, such as Qui Xiaolong)

Well, I don't think it has to be fiction, anyway, but that's just the way I am rolling. I like to play fast and loose with rules and since I made this game up (read: stole) I can play even faster and looser than usual.

I'm in, since I'm not able to focus on my reading right now I'm pretty sure my first two books of 2010 will cover H and A for me (Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, both by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. I'm counting Anderson for one and herbert for the other.)

One more question, do they have to be "new reads" - i.e. 26 books I've not read before, or can I throw in the odd re-read?

I vote that in the case of multiple authors, the reader can pick one letter to assign it to.
