I got my first speeding ticket ever a few moments ago. 55 in a 35. I deserved it, but the circumstances and reprecutions of this just suck. There weren't any far-out circumstances involved, but it was a nice night tonight, and after I had left the video store, on my way back home, I decided to just go cruising for a little while. So I did. On my way back home, there is another driver behind me who is chomping at the bit to go fast. At the light, I speed up, and he tailgaits me to some extent. Well, we're on this hill, going, up, and you have to speed anyway. And I just moved to this city and was exploring on a nice summer evening; I don't know the limits for all the roads (or where the cops hide). So I see cop lights flash, and I feel sick. I don't know if it's me or the other guy they're after, but I pull into a side street, while the cops are still far behind. I didn't run; but I was hoping it was the other driver they wanted, and thought getting off the road might be a good idea. It was me they wanted though, as they pulled into the side street. And I got my first speeding ticket ever.

I was going to drink tonight, but now I don't feel like it. I don't feel like watching my movie either. Everytime I drive, now, people are going to be honking their horns at me as they spit on my slow moving car while they pass me. For, I can't afford this crap. I'm courteous, really. Courteous people don't drive slowly. That's it for being nice.

This really stinks, because my insurance will go up, I'll loose time from work when I go to court, and, there could be other negative things as well. Damn. And I just got my personalized license plates the day before yesterday!

Similar thing happened to me. It's late and I'm driving on an empty highway (just north of Gilroy) minding my own business going maybe 4 or 5 mph over the limit, when this jerk ZOOMS up behind me and puts his brights on. I'm blinded and scared, so I speed up a bit (of course, there are completely empty lanes on both sides of us) to put some distance between me and said jerk.

Suddenly a cop appears on an on-ramp, comes up next to us and uses his loudspeaker to tell us to both pull over. I tell the cop that this freak is harassing me, but the cop will hear nothing of it and gives us both speeding tickets. Why he didn't believe me when he SAW this guy crawling up my ass on an otherwise empty freeway is beyond me.

Traffic cops suck.

Well--in a word of maybe encouragement--my insurance didn't go up when I got either of the two tickets I've received. Of course, one was out of state and the cop reduced my speed to 9 miles over the limit which doesn't add any points to your license. But the other one was an in-state and was a 4 point violation (they said 44 in a 25, I still don't believe them, but I lost the appeal) and my rates still didn't go up.

Actually, now that I think about it, other people I know have also not had their insurance rates go up after getting tickets.

Do you have to go to court?

If it's your first, you can take defensive driving. No points on your record and your rates won't go up. Easy breezy.

The cop told me I did 55, but the ticket says 53, which is good, because it means I wasn't reckless, and I don't have to go to court if I want to plead guilty and just pay the fine. I've had two moving violations in the past, but that was when I was around 16, seven years ago. The first was for failing to stop at a stop sign. I had stopped, but I was sitting there waiting for the traffic to let up for a long time, and it was raining, and I thought I could make it and I couldn't--wreck. I got to go to driving school for that. Then, I got a bogus ticket for wreckless driving because my car, while stopped, was facing the wrong way in the middle of the lane; it was a residential neighborhood, no traffic, no double-yellow line, and I was lost; I saw a woman working in her front yard, on the other side of the road, and I double parked in the other lane to ask directions, then a cop came down the road, stopped his car in the lane, and wrote me a ticket, thouroughly blocking the cars that were passing by now, making them commit the same crime I was being charged for--dick!--anyway, I fought that and got it reduced to something called improper driving; no fine, just court costs.

I'd like not to get the points, but don't know how I can arrange driving school without going to court or taking time off work. I should look into it though.

Dave, I don't know if VA has something like this, but in Texas, there are online defensive driving classes.

txdriving.com is one, and there's at least one other one. That won't help you, but I used it once, and thought I'd share with whoever could benefit from it.

Garg...I got pulled over cause I was going 85 in a 55...Yes I did it. Cop asks me if I knew how fast I was going. I tell him 80-85...He says "I clocked you at 105". So then I had a few options. 1) Go to court and plea bargain it down...Unfortunately in MN they never drop the mph more than 20 mph...and 30 over the limit is a mandatory reckless driving which carries a 90 day suspension...And I delivered pizza at that time in my life. 2) Go to court and try to claim that it's a bogus ticket and that the cop was lying (which he was) and explain that he never allowed me to see the radar gun (you have the right in MN) and he didn't even have running lights on, which qualifies as entrapment in MN. Unfortunately, at best, I'd get it dropped the 20 mph, and NOT get charged with reckless...Which is still a 180 dollar fine. Option 3) Pay the fine, hope they don't realize they shoulda nailed me with a reckless. I chose 3, really the safest of options. So now my insurance is 86 dollars a month for Liability on a 17 year old car. My fiancee pays 83 a month for full coverage on a 3 year old sportscar. I hate crooked cops and insurance companies.

Well, I just found out that my new town doesn't do the driving school thing. As backwards as they are here though, my ticket is only $83. Wonder what my insurance will come to
