Sorry, not Analog. What things do we know of that were invented by SF authors first, and now actually exist? I mean, I know Heinlein invented waterbeds in Stranger in a Strange Land, and waldoes (the robots, not the missing guy) in Waldo, Inc. But what else is there? There has to be a lot. Doesn't there? ------------------ Hard luck, you won. Congratulations, loser. -Lord Cavity babybabble

Asimov coined the term "Robotics" which is now widely used...But that wasn't the question, was it? IP: Logged |

Dim and misty memories from Russian class tell me that "robot" originally comes from the Russian verb for "to work", which I won't spell out here because a) I'm not sure I remember it entirely and b) I sure as hell can't transliterate when I'm this tired. But I'm decently sure that wasn't the question. [Edited to say I finally made SMU. And I've only been registered since May. Go me.] [Edited again because SMU or not, I still can't spell.] [This message has been edited by Algeh (edited August 13, 2001).] [This message has been edited by Algeh (edited August 13, 2001).] IP: Logged |

You are indeed correct, new SMU. "robot" is the root of both the Russian and Czech words for 'worker' and the verb 'to work'. I've never seen a production of RUR but I'd sure like to someday. IP: Logged |
