Bejeweled. A simple name, for a simple game. But, beyond the game lie deeper levels of meaning, and perhaps even the secret of life itself. Or not.If you have played the game, then you are familiar with it's cocaine-like addictiveness. However, if you look beyond the game itself, and it's simple rules and structure, you will see a reflection of the basic structure of human existence itself. The game, is a series of choices. Each choice changes the game board, leading to a change in the number of choices. This is already reflective of life, since we are constantly bombarded with choices when we aren't planting our ass on a chair in front of our computer playing the computer game equivalent of heroin. But I digress. Each choice leads to a change. The change may trigger a huge chain reaction, which is usually unanticipated by the inexperienced player. Such things happen in real life, when we are forced to sit back and watch, helpless, as events unfold for better or for worse. (Okay, it's a game, and every chain reacion helps you. Shut up, it's a tenuous connection at best. Smoke a joint and use your imagination, dammit.) The pace of the game, much like the pace of life, varies widely, from times when you see options all over the place and kill rows and start reactions at a frenetic pace, to the times when you're slowly plodding through the game, searching methodically for the option you've overlooked, or wasting time by frantically clicking everywhere, trying everything, to see if you can find what you missed. And, much like life, as you get more experienced, you begin to see patterns emerge where there previously were none. You gain the ability to predict the results of your actions with increasing clarity and precision, and the ability to see even the most hidden moves with ease. In theory, one could become like Neo in the Matrix, seeing the underlying nature of the game and being able to play as an afterthought, without really paying attention. Or you could become like me, a hopeless junkie writing an essay about a silly game at 11:00 on a Saturday when you should be reading the two books you have to finish by Wednesday. Crap, I need to get cracking. but only a little disjointed. youve got joint on the dome yo. we've tried this game, someone turned us on to it, it was ok, we moved one jewel around, and rows flashed for like 5 minutes, we had a few grand in points after that.IP: Logged |

You often end up where the choice you have to make is between making moves at the top of the board, and not shaking things up too much, but also not getting chain reactions and big points, or making moves lower on the game board where you may end up with big points and chain reactions, but at much greater risk.IP: Logged |

All games are like life, to a certain extent: attempting to achieve certain goals while adhering to a certain set of rules and avoiding or overcoming certain obstacles.Heck, even Mornington Crescent is a lot like life, come to think of it. ------------------ -=> Toon "For I perceive that behind this seemingly unrelated sequence of events, there lurks a singular, sinister attitude of mind." As far as I can tell, Mornington Crescent doesn't have rules so much as it has... a word bank.IP: Logged |

<ego trip> I can't help but feel I provoked this with a semi-hemi-demi-innocent post over on www.crap -- but maybe not, Dave certainly seems capable of finding Addictive Java Games on his own.On a similar note, everyone go play Alice. Now. </ego trip> IP: Logged |

You, my friend, are indeed the cause of all this. Because of you, I wasted valuable time having fun instead of studying! Not like it would have made any difference, though. And no, I usually don't find Java games on my own. I'm too lazy. ------------------ "That, and who snuck the numbers into my alphabet crack cocaine?" -annenayne, through the drugifier
