I've had four cups of coffee in one hour. I usually don't have more than one or two a day because it makes me jittery and cranky. My hands and feet are sweaty, and my head feels like a flourescent light bulb gone bad. Bzzzzzz. Hands shaking. Gotta go. Nature calls. Bzzzz.

Brak! I love Brak! I have a Brak T-Shirt which reads, "My monkey ate my homework." It came in handy when I returned to college to finish my degree three years ago. Unfortunately, when I moved to this little college town to attend school, I moved into a really old house with no cable hook-ups Oh, you can get the cable company to add hookups, but for more money than I'm willing to pay. I look forward to getting a decent (= non-temp) job and getting out of this place so I can have cable again. I haven't seen any Space Ghost stuff (aside from the occasional lucky coincidence of it being on at someone's house when I visit) for three whole years now. Ack! I like the coffee quote -- I'm going to see if I can find a .wav file of it. Hee hee. My favorite Brak song, though, is "Dont Touch Me." Bzzzz.

One time I hired a monkey to take notes for me in class. I would just sit there with my mind a complete blank while the monkey scribbled on little pieces of paper. At the end of the week the teacher said "Class, I want you to write a paper using your notes" so I wrote a paper that said "HELLO, MY NAME IS BINGO! I LIKE TO CLIMB ON THINGS. CAN I HAVE A BANANA? EEK EEK!" I got an F. When I told my mom about it she said "I told you, never trust a monkey!" The end. IP: Logged |

Coffee supposedly calms down hyperactive people (as long as it doesn't have sugar in it, that is). I suspect that it may calm down certain other people, too, just because. Okay, here's my analogy for caffeine, based on some knowledge of the biological mechanisms involved:Imagine that your body has a fuel reservoir that it uses slowly normally, like an engine. Caffeine causes you to burn up excess energy in a short amount of time, like a turbo booster, but using the same fuel supply. So caffeine will make you more energetic for a little while, but at the expense of your later fuel supply. So if you drink coffee all day, it's like you're running turbo boosters all day for no real reason, wasting fuel. If you didn't have much fuel supply to begin with, caffeine will only burn what little you have, making you more tired. According to this theory, caffeine is only good if you need a quick boost at that moment and you can refuel soon. For me, this theory works pretty well. Does this make sense to anyone else? Caffeine keeps your cyclic AMP levels from being reabsorbed, keeping your insulin levels high, and therefore maintaining high glucose-burning levels. It may do other stuff too, but that's the mechanism my theory was based on.IP: Logged |

I have a feeling hyperactive people have a slightly different mechanism from your average folk. Probably your ADD people do too, which would explain why Ritalin calms ADD folk down, while making average people hyper. Maybe it's similar? I'm just guessing here.IP: Logged |

Heck, I'll tell it again. This was a couple years back. My gang and I (maybe eight or nine of us together) went to see Titanic. At the Sony IMAX theater. Where the screen is 40'x90' and you can feel the sound system through the soles of your feet. And we caught a Saturday night showing, which began at 11:00 pm. You all remember how long that movie is? So at about 2:30 am we staggered out of the theater, about half of us hanging onto each other and crying, or at least going "Bwaaaah!" (We all liked the movie, okay?) And my friend Jordan looks around at all of us, puts on this huge manic grin, and says "Okay! Who's for coffee!?" And we all hit him. The End. ------------------ -=> Toon Onomotopia: a sociopolitical system that only sounds good. IP: Logged |

OK, psychology student alert: Why caffine and Ritalin calm hyper/ADHD people down, an essay. The thoery is that ADHD and some forms of general hyperactivity are caused by either a lack of dopamine receptors in the brain or undersensitive dopamine receptors. Caffine, Ritalin, most other stimulants, and some really random medications for heart problems and such, all increase the dopamine reuptake process. When regular functioning synapses experience this, it leads to hyperactivity. When underactive synapses experience it, it leads to regular functioning. So yeah, that's why coffee will make some people tired. You may, just possibly, have a shortage of dopamine. On the other hand, I don't have any idea why having too little dopamine will make ADHD people hyper but having too much after drinking coffee will make other people hyper. I'll ask my professor, though. [disclaimer] And always remember, I could be completely wrong. [/discliamer] ------------------ Someone should do something about everything. That's my opinion. I think I have tea for blood. I know my mom did. If I had to pick one image to describe my mother, it would be of her, sitting in the kitchen with a cigarette burning, writing a letter to her family in Ireland, while watching a Knicks game, with a cup of tea half drunk next to her, and the kettle already boiling for the next one. Heh. Wow, that was a tangent, but it just made me really really happy and fuzzy remembering my mom that way. The type of fuzzy that says she is here *right now* looking over my shoulder and laughing. IsMaryann, that sounds familiar. About one of the only good things my Unlamented was good for was telling me where I'd left my tea cup. I make myself stick to decaf tea at work, but it just doesn't have the same body to it. And they don't make decaf Prince of Wales. But let us speak briefly of my evil friend E. Sure, you may look at her and think she is a paragon of beauty. You may listen to her talk and think that she is among the most erudite and interesting people you have ever met. She is EVIL. EVIIILLL. I was innocently sitting in Brooklyn waiting for her to pickup her paycheck from the coffee shop when she handed me a cup and said, "Try this." I said, "No thanks: I don't really like coffee." She said, "Just try it." And lo, my mouth was filled with the sweet nectar of the gods. Coffee unlike any coffee I had known. Coffee that lived up to its aroma, without any bitterness at the end. So now I am on a rampage, trying desperately to find coffee here that even comes close and being disappointed at every turn. Feh!! She even bought me a bag of the stuff, but hasn't sent it yet. I'm going to curl up in the fetal position now.

I drink tea, iced or hot. If hot, it's better with cream. If cold, with lemon and no sugar please. I also love hot apple cider. The most common thing I drink is water. I think the only caffeine I really tend to get is chocolate. I will admit that I'm a complete coffee and tea addict. I don't drink that much, though, because I feel I should try to keep these addictions in check. I'll only have one or two cups of coffee a day, but I have two cups of iced tea at lunch.I especially like good coffee and tea. I have three coffee machines: an automatic drip, an espresso machine, and a French press. I really like Guatemala Antigua beans from Starbucks. No other bean compares, flavorwise. Right now, I have Sulawesi beans, because I was trying to be different, but it's just not the same. I have too much tea as well...I think I have about 10 varieties right now. Let's list them, shall we? Bancha, genmai-cha, sencha, green tea powder, sushi bar green tea, jasmine tea, dragonwell tea, lychee tea, English tea (PG Tips), Lipton tea bags (for iced tea), vanilla-almond tea, and cherry blossom tea. Huh. I guess that's more than 10. Anyway, you'll notice that my tea skews heavily towards the Oriental teas. I really dig on the Japanese teas. My fave right now is the genmai-cha, which is green tea with roasted rice. Good stuff. ------------------ "When I was much younger I wanted to be embalmed with fluorescent green fluid, posed in a menacing position, and fired from a cannon over my own unsuspecting funeral procession and out into the sea." --Bombadil IP: Logged |
