rated in accordance to controversiality

marilyn manson: rock is dead. shock is all in your head. people aren't surprised anymore. B+ before mechanical animals, D after

insane clown posse: best band in the world. hated by all fundamentalists groups b/c of their anti-abuse, anti-(all kinds of isms) stance. most recent albums' (two) profits went entirely to charity. A+

feminem: nothing original about this guy. he's ripping off of other people. the stuff you hear now of his is at least 6 years old. F------ (and "F" stands for FLAMING)

kiss: these guys should have retired for real the first time. while setting many precedents, they rode the fame for too long. C

All purposfully 'controversial' bands in general: Gah. Perhaps they should concentrate more on making better music than on being controversial. But of course "Rebellion, it always sells at a profit". C- because occasionally one of them comes out with a half-decent song.

IF (controversial AND witty) THEN

RATING = A+

ELSE

RATING = D

END IF

Non-controversial but simply hilarious: Flossie And the Unicorns. The name alone deserves an award. If you thought an LSD-free trip wasn't possible, listen to one of their albums for 20 minutes. Oh, by the way, they're all glove puppets. Pants-wettingly funny. A.

ICP is, imho, the most annoying band ever.

I admit to liking manson pre mechanical-animals as well.

I hate to say it, but I love comparing purple pills to purple hills, it's just funny. They changed heroin to whipped cream and it still flows!!!

umm I don't like kiss.

All Bands Rated Above: D-

Yuck! I don't like anyone who concentrates on promoting their image rather than their work, which should be the whole reason they are famous in the first place. This is why I mostly listen to extremely underground music these days... *turns up Sol Invictus*

*edited to say that early Manson isn't bad at all, and he was pretty good when I saw him in concert during his last tour*

Marylin Manson. Poser. D

Insane Clown Posse. Let's start with the fact that "posse" dates from when I was in high school and was a subject of mockery even then. Add to that the "insane clown" motif that's about as new as baroque art. Mix it all together with melody-less rap and what does it spell? I-C-P S-U-C-K-S. D-

eminem. More origonal than House of Pain, harder core than Vanilla Ice, way less laughable than Snow, and he still sucks. There's only one white rap act: the Beastie Boys. Period. D+

KISS. You know that movie about the knuckleheads who wanted to go to the KISS concert, you know, "Detroit Rock City"? There was a veritable cavalcade of nostalgia music from that period, and the only one that stood out to me in any way was "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones. I think that says it all. C-

I don't know how long ago you were in high school, but I know ICP has been around since at least '93...

Are those the guys who during live performances, one of them wears a horse suit? Never seen 'em myself but I've heard they're hilarious.

Abba - Despite themes of political unrest (Fernando), homosexuality (Dancing Queen), and wanton drug use (Heroin - or is that Velvet Underground? I always get the two confused), they still are a favorite of people trying to be hip at Bar Mitzvah receptions. Go figure. B-

Pink Floyd - The decision whether to bleep out the word "Bullshit" in the song Money has caused millions of Program Directors many a sleepless night. B+

The Shaggs - If you've heard them, you know. If you haven't, it's because The Powers That Be don't WANT you to. A

I'm surprised that in a rating of controversial bands, we see no Impotent Sea Snakes or for that matter G.G. Allen...both of which, I feel would get a B for controversiality and a D+ for true, musical talent.

I sense bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne trying to horn in on the 'wild stage show' arena, but the good lord baby jesus knows crazy makeup does not a live stage show make.

jarbabyj, rammstein fan.

I guess you hate Madonna then. I don't know if I agree, Miyu. I used to believe that, but I think there's some validity when a performer puts a lot of effort into their image. Their image becomes the focus of their work. There are always going to be people in the world who like crappy music and buy into the image. I guess that can be chalked up to the success of the band, not in music but in promoting themselves.

p.s. G.G. Allin would get a F in both music and persona. I had a friend in high school who wrote him letters and sent them to his prison. (He did actually get some mail back from the Degenerate One himself.) Talk about yuck.

Rage Against the Machine What's the big freakin' deal? The stuff they spout is nothing you wouldn't be able to find in pamphlet (or bullhorn) form on the Berkeley campus on any given day. Well, pretty much. B-

Rage broke up you know. (is that cheering I hear?) On a side note, jarbabyj, have you seen Ramstein live yet? They freakin rule! I'm seeing them this weekend

Edited to say, no I'm not, duh, I'm seeing Machine Head and Fear factory.

Y2Karen, I definately agree that to some extent, music artists can be talented even if the media concentrates on their appearence rather than their music, but it just seems a bit silly to me.

However, a few of the bands I listen to do like to promote a certain image. Death in June, for example, in which every publicity photo for the band either shows them wearing masks or with their backs facing the camera... And Skinny Puppy, one of my absolute all-time favorite bands, were known for their insane stage shows.

Another thing I just thought of... J-Rock or 'visual' Japanese bands. Wonderful to look at, usually nice to listen to as well. <3

Anyway, no idea if this made sense, as it's 2 AM and I haven't slept in a few days ;; My apologies.

Oh, and I don't like Madonna at all, except for that song she did that was written by Björk.

JARBABY! Let me be the first (and if I'm not, then let me pretend to be the first) to welcome you here!

I think your particular brand of verbal wizardry will go over well here.

Hey, thanks for the welcome!

I have indeed seen Rammstein live, six times in fact. Once, in the first row, an experience not to be passed up...unless you're opposed to getting wet
