Argh! I'm so confused about the various forms of Islam. What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite Islam and who believes which? What countries are officially ruled by rulers who subscribe to which kind of Islam, and what kinds of internal opposition do they have?

American media is sadly lacking in explanations for all of this. I'm reading the new Newsweek, which explains some stuff, but it's not as thorough as I'd like.

I'll think of more questions later. If anyone has answers to these questions, or more questions, please add on to this thread.
