Inspired by Anti Em's last post here. Think of it as an offshoot of The Most Lethal Poem, but for songs instead.Post the lyrics of songs you think are appropriate in light of the events of September 11th, 2001. And comment on other people's choices. I'd like to kick this off with a song they've been playing a whole lot on the radio lately -- it had started to become popular shortly before this, but it's been showing up much more frequently in the past couple of weeks. And I don't know about anyone else, but I've been finding it helpful ... in those moments when the fear is almost paralyzing, and you want to crawl into bed and hide under the covers until all of this goes away. The artist is Incubus; the song is entitled "Drive." Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear And I can't help but ask myself How much I let the fear take the wheel and steer
It's driven me before And it seems to have a vague haunting mass appeal But lately I'm beginning to find that I Should be the one behind the wheel Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there With open arms and open eyes Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there I'll be there So if I decide to waiver my Chance to be one of the high Will I choose water over wine And hold my own and drive? It's driven me before And it seems to be the way that everyone else gets around But lately I'm beginning to find That when I drive myself my light is found Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there With open arms and open eyes, yeah Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there I'll be there Would you choose water over wine, Hold the wheel and drive? Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there With open arms and open eyes Whatever tomorrow brings I'll be there I'll be there ------------------ -=> Toon "Toon, it's okay -- just think of the config.sys file as bizarre post-modern poetry." -Rob Wynne on #filkhaven IP: Logged |

How could that song possibly getting played more often, wasn't once an hour before this happened more than enough? (I like Incubus, but I can't stand that song)"Blowing in the Wind" by Bob Dylan (or many other artist, most notably Peter, Paul, and Mary) Sad Machines by Project 86 (I posted the lyrics to it, I think in the Pat Roberson thread) Ghetto by P.O.D. I believe that this world believes in love I believe that this world believes in love We might never really agree On anything about the lives we live Between you and me. So differently We don't always see things the same We should agree to disagree If we meet at love we can work it out I believe that this world believes in love I believe that this world believes in love I believe you and I will overcome I believe you and I believe in love Whether you think I'm so confused Or if you feel the way I do So don't give in to this hate within Living in this world of pain Don't let it bring you down The world is a ghetto I believe this world believes in love I believe this world believes in love I believe this world believes in love I believe you and I believe in love

I heard this one on the radio, and it touched me...Sting - Fragile If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one Drying in the colour of the evening sun Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away But something in our minds will always stay Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetime's argument That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star Like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are How fragile we are On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star Like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are How fragile we are How fragile we are How fragile we are

I don't actually think the entire song needs to be played, but the chorus of "One Tin Soldier" has been running through my head for days now. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, you can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgement day, on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away. IP: Logged |

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Paul SimonWhen you're weary, feeling small When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough And friends just can't be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down When you're down and out When you're on the street When evening falls so hard I will comfort you I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes And pain is all around Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Sail on silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine All your dreams are on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind IP: Logged |

Wow, thanks, Pet. I'm going to go home and listen to that tonight. I love Jeremy Enigk. Also, PA, "BOTW" is just a beautiful and sad song. The song I really wanted to hear in the first few days after Sept. 11 was "In God's Country." I just like the song a lot (it's one of only five U2 songs I like). Ironically, though, it's a song about America's weakness in greed. It's ironic because when I was trying to come up with the Why of the terrorist attacks, some of my own anti-consumerist tendencies figured in.
"In God's Country" by U2 Desert sky Dream beneath a desert sky The rivers run But soon run dry We need new dreams tonight Desert rose Dreamed I saw a desert rose Dress torn in ribbons And in bows Like a siren she calls (to me) Sleep comes like a drug In God's country Sad eyes, crooked crosses In God's country Set me alight We'll punch a hole right through the night Everyday the dreamers die She is Liberty And she comes to rescue me Hope, faith, her vanity The greatest gift is gold Sleep comes like a drug In God's country Sad eyes, crooked crosses In God's country Naked flame She stands with a naked flame I stand with the sons of Cain Burned by the fire of love Burned by the fire of love IP: Logged |

The Wind --Cat StevensI listen to the wind to the wind of my soul Where I'll end up well I think, only God really knows I've sat upon the setting sun But never, never never never I never wanted water once No, never, never, never I listen to my words but they fall far below I let my music take me where my heart wants to go I swam upon the devil's lake But never, never never never I'll never make the same mistake No, never, never, never IP: Logged |

I finally got "Overcome" on tape. Gorgeous song. Except that I kept wanting the last chorus to end "And I will overcome..."But that's just me. ------------------ -=> Toon "Toon, it's okay -- just think of the config.sys file as bizarre post-modern poetry." -Rob Wynne on #filkhaven IP: Logged |

Yeah, it is. It's about how everything in your body is Chicago, and everything that's not in your body is not Chicago. Here's my song, by REM That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine... (It's time I had some time alone)

thought of another song. The band actually just rerecorded a version of this song for their greatest hits and now have dedicated it to the people that were affected. You can download the new version on their website (stavesacre.com)Gold and Silver by Stavesacre. You slipped from my arms, I knew you had to go Such a heavy heart, who could hope to hold And I know where you're going, and that's the hardest part No matter where tonight ends, you won't escape your broken heart Stay a while Helpless for the words, and it tightens up the air It's not what you deserve, it's not for lack of care Inside of me is screaming out, I'm praying for my prayers Distracting and unworthy of each and every burning tear Seems insincere Do I see God in all of this, maybe all along It's just that we're so small, and simply not as strong Strong like wings of silver, and feathers made of gold To carry heavy hearts, to cover all our helpless souls To cover all of us Under wings of Gold and Silver sometimes we have to hide For shelter from this bitter winter at least tonight If it were mine to give I'd give you your own time Turn it back or forward whatever you decide Stay a while ------------------ "You won't find me gone Raised Hands Surrond Us 3 Nails to Protect Us I'll find my way back home Raised Hands Surround Us 3 Nails to Protect Us" -Project 86 "Open Hand" IP: Logged |

That's backwards actually. quote:
(Mango) What is "Is Chicago" about? (Doughty) Like, lyrically? (Mango) Yeah. (Doughty) I was tripping in Chicago, and it occurred to me that everything outside the limits of my body Is Chicago, and everything inside was not Chicago.

Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying by Belle and SebastianOh, get me away from here, I'm dying Play me a song to set me free Nobody writes 'em like they used to So it may as well be me Here on my own now after hours Here on my own now on a bus Think of it this way, You could either be successful or be us With our winning smiles, and us With our catchy tunes, oh us Now we're photogenic--you know, We don't stand a chance. So I'll settle down with some old story About a boy who's just like me Thought there was love in everything and everyone You're so naive! They always reach a sorry ending They always get it in the end Still it was worth it as I turned the pages solemnly and then With a winning smile the boy With naivete succeeds In the final moment, I cry-- I always cry at endings. Oh, that wasn't what I meant to say at all From where I'm sitting rain Falling against the lonely tenement Has set my mind to wander Into the windows of my lovers They never know unless I write This is no declaration I just thought I'd let you know Goodbye, said the hero in the story It is mightier than swords I could kill you, sure, but I could only make you cry with these words Cry with these words. Oh, get me away, I'm dying Get me away, I'm dying Get me away, I'm dying Oh, I'm dying, yeah Oh, I'm dying, yeah IP: Logged |
